Chair Rails are Simple But Elegant Upgrades

Chair rails are considered to be a form of trimwork or millwork. Chair rails date back a long time and were traditionally used in dining spaces in order to prevent chairs from banging into the wall. Today, chair rails are used for decorative purposes not only in dining rooms, but throughout the home in any room where you want to add extra interest and beauty.

Chair rails are essentially a piece of rounded molding that runs along the middle of the wall in your room. The rounded molding can stand alone or it can be “built-up” with a piece of flat molding below it if you want a more substantial look. Chair rails are painted the color of the other trimwork in your home, including your baseboards and crown molding. Some people will then paint a different color on the walls above and below the chair rail, while others keep the wall color the same on both sides of the trim.

Adding chair rail is a simple and easy upgrade to a room, and is typically included in rooms that already have both crown molding and baseboards as a special and beautiful add-on.

An Affordable Alternative—Polyurethane Molding

Polyurethane molding is an affordable alternative to wood or MDF moldings. By using polyurethane molding, you can find molding designs that you otherwise would be unable to locate or that would be very expensive to purchase. You can also create a beautiful space with elegant trimwork that will last for a long time and be maintenance free, unlike wood trim which often cracks due to changes in humidity and which needs to be routinely painted to stay looking nice.

There are a variety of different types of polyurethane molding products that you can incorporate in your home including:

  • Corbels, which are an elegant addition to mantels and cabinetry and a great way to dress up the support for granite or countertop overhangs
  • Ceiling medallions, which can be used with chandeliers or on their own and which draw the eye to the ceiling and create a beautiful old-world touch.
  • Crown molding, which can be installed to close the gap between ceiling and wall and to help make a room look more finished
  • Chair rail, which is installed in the middle of the wall in a room where you want a little bit more trim or where you want to paint the tops and bottoms of your walls a different color.

These are just a few examples of polyurethane molding products that you may be able to purchase to make your home a more elegant place to be.

Don’t Forget the Caulk When Using Polyurethane Molding

When you take on your own home improvement project, it’s easy to get overwhelmed with all the unexpected details. Therefore you might find yourself forgetting things that can help make the finished product look its best. One such detail that could be missed is the caulk that goes with your polyurethane molding.

Why You Need Caulk

Once you install your polyurethane molding, you are sure to have gaps. They will come:

  • Between the edge of the molding and the wall
  • Between pieces of your polyurethane molding
  • In the corners

If you fail to caulk these cracks, you are going to have a job that looks and feels unfinished.

How to Keep Your Caulk Lines Neat

Some people shy away from doing their own caulking because they are afraid of the potential mess. However, with a little preparation and a steady hand, you can have clean professional caulking lines. The hardware store often carries a little tool with a handle and an end shaped like a triangle that you can use to drag and create perfect lines. For a few bucks, it’s certainly worth the money.

So when installing polyurethane molding, don’t forget the caulk!

Polyurethane Molding As an Alternative to Wood Molding

Polyurethane molding is a reasonable alternative to wood for several reasons. The lighter weight and ease of installation are only the surface points in its favor:

  • Can be recycled when taken down
  • Could already be made from recycled materials
  • No trees are cut down to make it
  • Longer lasting and less prone to drying as it ages
  • Looks the same once installed

If those aren’t reason enough to choose this alternative, the wide variety of designs and styles will be. Each piece is carved by machines and is not prone to the imperfections that wood can get from knots and other problems.

Polyurethane molding will give a lifetime of beauty to your home for far less maintenance than wood, and is easy to install for the do it yourself handy person. It stands up to changing weather more readily than wood, and can be used outdoors as well for this reason.

A Look at Installing Polyurethane Crown Molding

Installing polyurethane crown molding is much easier than you might think. It is much lighter than the wooden counterpart, therefore easier to handle and lift. While it is recommended you have at least one other person to assist you, the job goes much faster when the pieces are lighter.

Selecting the Right Molding

Selecting the proper style and accessory pieces that will complement your molding is another step to take into consideration when ordering the molding itself. Support pieces can add visual appeal as well as help secure the longer pieces. And corner pieces will help hide any imperfect cuts and give a finished look to the project. Outside corner pieces will cap off the ends giving a finished look as well.

Paint First

Any painting that needs to be done should be finished and dried before installing the polyurethane crown molding, and touched up when the installation is completed. This cuts down on the amount of work involved, since it is much easier to paint what is at eye level as opposed to climbing a ladder with a brush and bucket.

Creating Elegance with Polyurethane Crown Molding

Creating a unique look in a room with polyurethane crown molding is much easier than you might think. That’s because it is:

  • Easy to work with
  • Found in a wide variety of styles to choose from
  • Lighter than wood for easier installation
  • Available in multiple options to create a custom look

Premier Wood offers a huge selection of accessory pieces to add to the molding to make each room stand out. You will find pieces that may not be available in your local home improvement stores, since they typically only carry what is popular in the area and what sells well. This leaves them with fewer options for the truly creative homeowner.

From the corner pieces to the carve add-on accessories, polyurethane crown molding can become a work of art in and of itself. The hardest part of the entire process may be the selection itself. Each room should have a look and feel of its own–and by custom crafting the trim work involved, this can be achieved.
